HMS Hurworth visit

Added 27/04/2010

East Kilbride based Sea Cadets were fortunate to be invited to visit a real live Royal Navy Hunt Class Mine Counter Measure Vessel, HMS Hurworth, currently on exercise in the Clyde. The Portsmouth based Vessel was built in 1985. The ship has a crew of 45 which includes 7 Navy Divers who carry out the dangerous tasks of decommissioning mines. She has predominantly been based in the Middle East, receiving battle honours for work in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and most recently in 1991 for its work clearing mines in the Gulf. The Cadets were able to see first hand how the operations work; from the state of the art sonar technology used to locate mines, to the use of robotics ( the fox) to detect them. The Cadets were given a unique opportunity to meet the crew, talk about life aboard a ship and what opportunities the Navy holds for new recruits. They would like to thank the Commanding Officer and his crew for their hospitality.
